The West Hollywood City Council composed of 5 members voted 3-1, with one abstention, in favor of the adoption of the fur ban or banning of clothing products using animal fur.
A final vote has yet to be taken by the Council for the ordinance to be passed. But if it pushes through, West Hollywood will become the first city in the United States and in the entire world to impose such ban.
"We made history. We're the first place in the world, I believe, certainly the country, to take that step and ban fur," Ed Buck, an organizer of the local group Fur Free WeHo, told the Reuters.
According to reports, the fur ban only applies to clothing apparel and does not include furniture items made with fur. The ban reportedly will affect only a "handful."
Tucked between Beverly Hills and Hollywood, West Hollywood city has long been a progressive advocate for animal rights. The city led the way in banning the declawing of cats and the sale of cats and dogs in pet stores.
