New Year Greetings From P-Noy (Transcript)

New Year Greetings From P-Noy
President Noynoy "P-Noy" Aquino wished every Filipino family more blessings and success this 2012 in his pre-recorded New Year message.

President Aquino said that economic development is now evident after treading the straight path, fighting against corruption and making efforts for poverty alleviation, since he took office one and a half years ago. He thanked the public for supporting the government towards reforming the system of governance.

P-Noy added that reforms will not only continue in 2012 but changes will also take effect faster.

Here's the transcript of P-Noy's New Year message:

MMFF 2011 winners at the box office race
The Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) 2011 winners have been revealed last night in a glittering awarding ceremony held at the Newport Performing Arts Theater at Resorts World Manila in Pasay City. Check out the results HERE.

While Gov. ER Ejercito's "Manila Kingpin: The Asiong Salonga Story" emerged as the big winner of yesterday's Awards Night, sweeping the technical awards and bagging the Best Picture, the action movie still has to earn more ticket sales to win or even just catch up at the box office race.

According to the 3-day box-office figures released by MMFF Executive Chairman Francis Tolentino, the action movie earned P7,957,716.50, just 6th among the 7 participating movies.

"Enteng ng Ina Mo", the debut pairing of box office royalties Vic Sotto and Ai-Ai de las Alas, is on the number 1 spot with P91, 892,997.10 while Sen. Bong Revilla's "Ang Panday 2" collected P51,527,616.00 and on the second place.

Check out below the full tally of the official MMFF 2011 3-day gross (December 25-27, 2011):
  1. Enteng ng Ina Mo - P91, 892,997.10

*There is a discrepancy on the reports regarding the earnings of  "Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow." Kris Aquino earlier tweeted that the Regal Films movie raked in P10.1 million on the opening day. Let's just wait for Box Office Mojo's and the coming reports from MMFF executive committee to see if there is indeed an error in this initial report.

2011 MMFF: 'Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow' disqualified in 4 major awards

2011 MMFF entry "Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow"
Regal Entertainment's "Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow" has been disqualified in four major award categories at the 2011 Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) after committing some violations.

According to Metropolitan Manila Development Authority Chairman Francis Tolentino, there were revisions in the script and cast which are against festival rules.

"After the script was approved, iba yung lumabas, iba yung cast [what was shown was different, even the cast was different]. Pareho lang yung title [Only the title was the same]," Tolentino told Radyo Inquirer Tuesday.

Tolentino said the movies were approved to enter the MMFF based on the script submitted earlier this year - major changes on the script are in violation of the rules of the Festival.

And thus, the MMFF executive committee has decided not to include the film in the following awards: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Screenplay and Gatpuno Villegas Cultural Award.

Tolentino added that movie producer Mother Lily Monteverde admitted the violations.

"Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow" is the only straight-on drama in this year's MMFF. Its star-studded cast include Maricel Soriano, Gabby Concepcion, Agot Isidro, Jericho Rosales, Dennis Trillo, Paulo Avelino, Carla Abellana, Lovi Poe and many more.

The 2011 MMFF awards night will be held on December 28, 2011 at the New World Resort Hotel.

Justin Bieber gives his childhood friend a car for Christmas

Justin Bieber's gift to his friend Ryan Butler
If there would be a reason why haters should start befriending Justin Bieber, it would have to be because the teen pop star treats his dear friends extra special during Christmas - he does not mind the price tag when it comes to his gifts to them, at least to his BFF.

Justin Bieber, one of the richest teenagers in the world with his net worth of $85 million, has just bought his childhood best friend Ryan Butler a two-door cream-colored Ford Mustang as Christmas gift.

Ryan Butler tweeted on Monday a photo (the one on the right) of his luxurious Christmas present from his friend with a short message saying "Justin got me a present. #swag!!!"

Justin didn’t post anything about his generous gift on his official Twitter account, but he did post photos of himself at home with his family.

Justin and Ryan grew up together in Stratford, Ontario of Canada. Ryan's parents provided additional parenting for Justin when he was only five years old.

Directed by Cathy Garcia-Molina, Angel and John Lloyd's new movie has been officially titled "Unofficially Yours". It will be released under Star Cinema this January 2012, according to reports.

"Unofficially Yours" is about two people who found themselves falling in love with each other despite being not ready to enter in a romantic relationship yet. Angel, meanwhile, is Ces, a modern-day woman who is afraid of committing herself into relationships.

Angel recently revealed that their movie is not just filled with the usual "kilig" and laughter of movies of this genre but it has a unique story and there are daring scenes as well.

“Iba siya, ibang story. Usually, hindi siya pinaguusapan, pero alam natin na nangyayari siya sa paligid natin. Very interesting yung topic.Tapos yung love scenes namin hindi naman siya yung tipong nakakainis panoorin. Sakto lang naman po. First time namin pareho gawin yung mga medyo maselang eksena dito sa pelikula.” she said.

Regarding their love scenes, John Lloyd said "Iisipin mo yun, ulit-ulitin mo. Nasa taas kami ng hagdanan nun ‘di ba? Simulan mo sa baba, tapos baba kayo ulit, ganon. Hunk [ako dito]. Gusto ko i-maintain lang yung body ko e. Mahirap lang talaga. Yun lang ang ma-i-o-offer namin ngayon. Sana abangan niyo.”

The tentative release date of "Unofficially Yours" will be on January 18, 2012.

Sendong victims rescued at sea (Raw Video)

Sendon victims rescued at sea by seafarers
A video of a random rescue of Sendong victims swept out to the sea has been posted on Youtube. The video shows eight individuals, 5 of them are children, who were desperately clinging to wooden debris to remain afloat 12 kilometers away from the nearest shore in Iligan City, one of the most badly affected areas of the Tropical Storm Sendong. They were spotted by seamen aboard the M/V Yang A who immediately facilitated a rescue operation.

In the video, the victims, only one of them knows how to swim, can be heard saying they have been drifted to the sea by a gush of flood water that hit their homes Friday night - they were rescued the next morning. One of the adult women says she had her kids with her and is worried about them since she thinks they are dead already.

Check out below the said video courtesy of "tatacalungsod":

A number of Sendong victims were sent offshore by flood. Some of them were found as far as 80 kilometers from land - many were dead.

According to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council, the Sendong death toll has now climbed to 1,010 - 650 in Cagayan de Oro City, 283 in Iligan City and the rest in other areas. At least 51 people are still missing.

Bagyong Sendong: Netizens furious over controversial Facebook comment

Bagyong Sendong: Controversial Facebook comment goes viral
A screen capture of a Facebook "wall post" from a certain Celine Acut is making the rounds on the social networking site right now. In the post, the Facebook user said the dead victims of Tropical Storm Sendong "better die this early." There is no use of living in poverty and hunger, she said.

"according to the news, almost all of the victims are poor families, so it's better that they all die this early... whats the point of living a life which is full of hunger. at least they are now resting with peace.. they are worthless, they are unproductive and thier lives has no value at all.. they are just making more problems to the society so as i sadi its better that they have died this early... they don't deserve a chance to live because they are poor, they are not VIP anyways... I even wish sendong to come back and flash away those remaining poor families over there.." the post reads.

The said Facebook post has been shared more than two thousand times as of this writing. It has also received more than a thousand of responses from angry netizens who lambasted the user and the rude commentary. Here are some of the comments:

"I agree with Garnet, the person who wrote these comments is in need of help. Mentally, Morally, Emotionally and Spiritually. I have no idea where they get this idea to make these types of statements. This type of statement makes me sad for this person and for their fate in days to come. We will forget these comments in time but this one will remain in this state unless a repentant heart is granted." - Tom William

"to Celine Acut.. If only you have seen our pitiful situation Im sure Your Iron heart will melt, IF NOT MELT IT IN THE DEEPEST PIT OF HELL TOGETHER WITH YOUR DECAYING SOUL. Just think if one of your love ones was caught in this tragedy how will you feel. I feel sorry for your love ones having the likes of you. GO TO HELL..." - Giacomo Estenzo

"wow! and you call yourself a human being? and you say they are 'useless to society'? Well let me tell you this YOU'RE USELESS TO SOCIETY NOT DOING ANYTHING! By criticizing this people who have nothing makes no less than them..you are not worth being called a person for you have disgraced the human heart. I hope you have just reflected on how worthless and low you are." - Maia Lucagbo

Jon Bon Jovi on death hoax: 'Heaven looks a lot like New Jersey'

Jon Bon Jovi is alive and well contrary to online reports that he is dead!

Jon Bon Jovi released the photo above to belie reports that he died of heart attack Monday.
On his Facebook page, the 49-year-old rock star posted a photo of himself to dismiss the false reports. The photo shows Jon Bon Jovi holding a huge grin on his face while standing in front of a Christmas tree and holding a sign that reads "Heaven looks a lot like New Jersey."

The same picture was also posted on Bon Jovi band's Twitter page, accompanied by a message saying, "Rest assured that Jon is fine - this photo was just taken."

A website called "dailynewbloginternational" had wrongly claimed the singer-actor suffered a cardiac arrest at Empress Hotel in New Jersey and later died in Jersey Shore Medical Center Monday. The report contains the following:
Rockstar Jon Bon Jovi (John Francis Bongiovi, Jr) was pronounced dead  today after paramedics found him in a coma at his Empress Hotel, city  and law enforcement of Asbury Park, NJ sources told The Times after  World Christmas Tour concert on The Bamboozle Festival,North Beach Asbury Park.

New Jersey Fire Department-First Aid Captain Douglas Gray told The  Times that paramedics responded to a 911 call from the home. When they  arrived, Bon Jovi was not breathing.

The paramedics performed CPR and took Bon Jovi to Jersey Shore  Medical Center, Ruda said. Hundreds of reporters gathered at the  hospital awaiting word on his condition. The sources, who spoke on the  condition of anonymity, said Bon Jovi team rushed to Bon Jovi’s bedside,  where he suffered Cardiac arrest.

The detectives plan to interview relatives, friends and Bon Jovis’s  doctors to try to figure out what happened. The N.J. County coroner’s  office will determine a cause of death. A New Jersey Fire Department  source told The Times that Bon Jovi was in full cardiac arrest when  rescue units arrived.
Apparently, the fake report was copied from a Los Angeles Times announcement of the death of Michael Jackson in 2009.

The Jon Bon Jovi hoax is just the latest in a long line of notable faux-fatalities including Jackie Chan, Denzel Washington, David Guetta, Kevin Bacon, Charlie  Sheen and Jared Leto.

iPad 3 Rumors: New iPad to be launched in February 2012?

iPad 3 rumors predict arrival of next generation iPad
Rumors have it that the iPad 3 will be launched in February 2012.

Citing "sources in the supply chain," Digitimes reported that the iPad 3 is "expected to be available in the next 3-4 months as makers in the supply chain have started delivering parts and components for the new tablet to OEM contractors while reducing those prepared for iPad 2"

"Foxconn Electronics will begin to produce the next-generation iPads in January and to ramp up the production volume starting February," Digitimes added.

Industry Leader Magazine (ILM) also reported the rumor and added that the reason why Apple might launch the iPad 3 in February is because it wants to "upstage Samsung’s (also a rumor but there is high possibility that it pushes through) February launch of their own next-generation Galaxy Tab."

ILM also said there are speculations that the specifications of the iPad 3 would include a high-resolution, retina display, screen based on new technology from Sharp (most likely 2048 x 1536 display); an A6 chip; a larger capacity battery; higher resolution apps; and an LTE support. The iPad 3 is likely to be just a bit thicker, ILM said.

Meanwhile, there is an iPad 3 concept video posted on Youtube which contains rumors about the specs of the new generation iPad as well. Read more details about it here: http://noypistuff.blogspot.com/2011/12/ipad-3-rumors-surface-concept-video.html

Robin Lim named 2011 CNN Hero of the Year

Robin Lim wins 2011 CNN Hero of the Year
Filipino-American midwife Robin Lim was named the 2011 CNN Hero of the Year in a star-studded ceremony Sunday evening at The Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, U.S.A.

"Ibu Robin" ("Mother Robin" in the local language) founded the Yayasan Bumi Sehat (Healthy Mother Earth Foundation) health clinics, which offers free maternal healthcare to thousands of poor women in Indonesia. Since 2003, Lim and her team have been working to combat the high maternal and infant mortality rates in the Asian country.

Fifty-four-year-old Lim was born to a Filipino mother and an American father and was raised in the Philippines.

"Every baby's first breath on Earth could be one of peace and love. Every mother should be healthy and strong. Every birth could be safe and loving. But our world is not there yet," Lim had been quoted saying.

The CNN Hero of the Year was chosen based on the results of a 11-week public vote on CNN's website. As the winner, Lim's cause received $250,000 in addition to the $50,000 that she and the rest of the top 10 CNN Heroes each received for making the top 10.

Now on its fifth year, the multi-platform campaign honors individuals from around the world who go an extra mile to help others. More than 10,000 submissions from over 100 countries were sent this year.

Two years ago, Filipino Efren Peñaflorida received the same recognition for his Kariton classroom project, which brought the classrooms to children in the streets.

Moonshine death toll in India rises to 155

Moonshine deaths now 155
The number of deaths from tainted moonshine liquor in the Indian state of West Bengal has risen to 155, AFP reported Friday.

Most of those killed in the moonshine mass poisoning were poor people, including construction workers, rickshaw-pullers and street vendors. Several children also died.

More than a hundred of individuals who drank the contaminated home-made spirits are still in the hospitals.

According to the police, the victims ingested the poisonous moonshine Wednesday night and began dying early Thursday morning.

"More and more people are turning up with symptoms of liquor poisoning and one local hospital is now overcrowded," Local magistrate Narayan Swarup Nigam said.

The administrator added that methanol had been detected in at least 20 victims, which is being suspected to be the reason of the mass poisoning. Used as a fuel, solvent or anti-freeze, methanol is highly toxic.

Deaths attributed to toxic alcohol are reportedly common in India. Locally known as desi, daru, toddy or moonshine, the brew is often spiked with methyl alcohol and industrial spirits and, mixed wrongly, can cause vomiting, blindness and death.

Moonshine is mixed in illegal backyard stills, usually using molasses and the fragrant flowers of the mahua tree. A small plastic bagful of moonshine costs as little as five rupees.

Authorities have arrested four alleged bootleggers as local residents ransacked village breweries and staged protests.

The families of those who died have been offered of compensation from the local government.

"I want to take strong action against those manufacturing and selling illegal liquor," state chief minister Mamata Banerjee said.

The moonshine deaths are the highest since July 2009, when 122 people were killed in western Gujarat state after consuming toxic alcohol.

India has one of the faster growing legal alcohol markets in the world.

US deficit falls to lowest level in 2 years

US deficit falls to 2-year low of $110.3 billion
The US current-account deficit has narrowed in the third quarter to $110.3 billion, the lowest level since the final three months of 2009, Associated Press (AP) reported Thursday.

The broadest measure of international trade because it includes income payments and government transfers, the current-account deficit of America has fell to 11.6 percent, reflecting stronger exports and a decrease in the deficit on goods.

AP added that there was a 4.6 percent drop ($181.8 billion) in the deficit in goods for the third quarter while the surplus in services rose to $46.2 billion or 4.1 percent which was facilitated by gains in airline ticket sales to foreigners.

Meanwhile, the surplus in income increased to 2.5 per cent ($58.3 billion) in the same quarter. There was also a smaller deficit of $33 billion in unilateral transfers, the category that covers U.S. foreign aid.

The current-account deficit stood at 2.9% of the country's GDP in the third quarter, down from 3.3% in the previous quarter and the smallest percentage since the fourth quarter of 2009.

Arlington man jailed for causing multiple-car crashes, shooting

Arlington man Thomas Lester Harper jailed
An Arlington man has been jailed after identified as suspect in two multiple-vehicle crashes and shooting that left two people dead and four injured including two toddlers in Arlington, Texas.

Thomas Lester Harper, 27, is now being held at the Arlington City Jail on $555,000 bond after charged with murder, intoxication manslaughter and two counts of child abandonment and endangerment. Police believe drugs were a factor.

Police said Harper drove his blue sport utility vehicle - with his twin toddlers inside - when he caused a three-vehicle wreck on N. Collins Street.

Harper then fled the scene before causing a second multiple-vehicle crash in which killed 42-year-old motorist Najee Nasir.

Police officials said Harper then fatally shot 19-year-old Clarenence Bryan Robinson who reportedly was trying to help those involved in the crash.

Harper, who was laughing at the scene, reportedly admitted his involvement to the police. A handgun was recovered at the scene.

His toddler-aged twins - a boy and a girl - were brought to Cook Children's Hospital in Fort Worth for non-life threatening injuries.

Geminid meteor shower peaks on December 14, 2011

Geminid meteor shower in 2009 | Courtesy of Shusaku Tago
If you missed the total lunar eclipse last Saturday, here's a consolation for you. Another celestial phenomenon is set to peak on December 14, 2011 which is tonight. It is the annual Geminid meteor shower which reportedly will produce 40 shooting stars an hour.

Tonight's meteor shower will start at around 9:30 p.m. (Philippine Standard Time) till the early hours of the following morning. The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration, however, warned that a "waning gibbous moon" will interfere with the show.

The Geminid meteor shower is visible to the naked eye under a dark and cloudless sky. It could be observed initially in the eastern sky, then overhead, and in the western sky.

According to a Wikipedia article, the Geminid meteor shower is thought to be intensifying every year and recent showers have seen 120–160 meteors per hour under optimal conditions, generally around 2am to 3am local time. The meteors from this shower are slow moving, Wikipedia added.

Lunar Eclipse on Saturday gave moon watchers a rare treat

Lunar Eclipse on December 10, 2011*
It has been raining the whole week in many parts of the country but on Saturday evening the rain clouds suddenly just dispersed to pave way to a rare celestial phenomenon, a total lunar eclipse. The clear skies gave sky gazers a good view of the last total lunar eclipse for three years - the next one will be on April 15, 2014.

Last Saturday's lunar eclipse started at around 7:33 p.m. (Philippine Standard Time) and ended at 1:30 a.m. on the following day - reportedly longer than the last lunar eclipse witnessed in June 2011.

The spectacular colors the moon emitted as it went through the different phases of the eclipse amazed observers from around the globe.

"The moon took on a reddish glow, as some indirect sunlight continued to reach it after passing through the Earth’s atmosphere. Since the atmosphere scatters blue light, only red light strikes the moon, giving it an eerie crimson hue." Suntimes reported.

The eclipse also gave skywatchers an extra special treat when it appeared to be inflated and supersized - which was just a neat illusion since the moon is not actually any wider.

A total lunar eclipse takes places when the Earth passes between the sun and the moon, casting the moon in shadow.
