Suspension of classes on September 27, 2011 in several areas in Luzon including NCR (Metro Manila) is highly likely to be announced since Public Storm Warning Signals (PSWS) have been hoisted over those areas.

According to the guidelines set by the Department of Education (DepEd), classes in kindergarten will automatically be suspended when an area is under PSWS #1, while classes in high school and lower levels will be canceled automatically if PSWS #2 is raised over the area. There will be no classes in all levels including in colleges and universities if the area is under PSWS #3.

Forty areas are currently under storm signals, 8 of which are under PSWS #3, based on the 5 p.m. (September 26, 2011) bulletin from the state weather bureau. However, DepEd usually bases the suspension of classes on the 5 a.m. bulletin. In previous situations like this, parents were advised to wake up earlier for the most recent bulletin.

Meanwhile, here are the guidelines on the suspension of classes in tertiary levels of the Commission on Higher Education (CHED):
In line with the guidelines of the National Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (NDRRMC), the following are the guidelines for the suspension of classes in higher education institutions :

1. Classes at the collegiate level, including graduate school, are automatically suspended if the proper authorities have declared storm signal no. 3 or higher.

2. Classes at the collegiate level, including graduate school, may be suspended at the discretion of heads of HEIs if special circumstances in their area such as flooding, road damage, etc. warrant it.

3. HEI heads or their duly authorized representatives shall make the announcement for the suspension of classes not later than 5 A.M. of the day when it shall take effect, using all means of communication.

4. Even without the suspension of classes, students who are unable to report to class or participate in scheduled activities such as exams, due to inclement weather, shall be given consideration and be allowed to make up for the missed class or activity.
